What are the benefits of our Study Abroad Featured Programs?

The goals of all our international study programs are to ensure that you have an opportunity to become part of the country and culture in which you are studying. Immersion in the culture is an essential part of these programs. Featured Programs vary in structure, but usually include opportunities for field study, guided travel opportunities, internships, and special projects. Each Featured Program has been carefully developed and refined over time by one of our member institutions.

How do the Study Abroad Additional Programs differ from the Featured Programs?

Additional Programs are semester- (or term), short-term, or year-long study abroad opportunities, just like Featured Programs. While Featured Programs reflect certain hallmarks of our mission – including experiential learning and community service – only some Additional Programs require internships, field study, guided travel, or service learning.

Are Featured Programs restricted to certain majors?

Most Feature Programs are interdisciplinary and are open to students regardless of major. Some provide opportunities for students majoring in fields such as engineering, nursing, or education — majors for which study abroad can often present scheduling challenges.

What happens to credits earned in our Study Abroad programs?

Credits earned during a semester abroad through our Study Abroad usually transfer back to your home institution, but it’s best to check with your registrar.

Are spaces reserved specifically for students of The New American Colleges and Universities institutions?

Institutions offering Featured Programs agree to reserve at least two spaces for students from other New American Colleges and Universities institutions. Additional Programs do not have specific spaces reserved but do welcome students from other member institutions.

How can I apply for an Study Abroad program?

You should apply directly to the institution that offers the program, simply by clicking on the title of the program in which you are interested on our website. That institution will provide the application, many of which are available for download online. If it is not online, you can call or e-mail the provided Study Away contact for that program to begin your application process.

What happens after I am accepted into a Study Abroad program?

Once you have been accepted in a program, you pay tuition, room and board, and student fees at your home institution, just as you would if you were in residence on campus. Some institutions may charge a “study away” fee in addition to normal student fees for the semester. Your home institution will be billed directly by the institution hosting the international study program. Your own institution’s policies regarding financial aid for study abroad apply to participation in Study Abroad programs.
